How the Tawjihi average is calculated

Under the two-year system, grade 11 and grade 12 both count towards your final average: year one is worth 30 points, year two is worth 70. This page explains where each number comes from, and where the pass mark is applied.

Year one — grade 11, out of 30

Every student sits the same year one: four subjects totalling 300 marks.

SubjectMaxPass mark
Arabic10040
English10040
Islamic Education6024
Jordan History4016
Total300

The year-one total is divided by 10 to give a score out of 30, so a total of 236 marks gives 23.60.

If you do not take Islamic Education

Islamic Education can be excluded. It drops out of both the total and the pass test, and the divisor becomes 8 instead of 10 so the score still tops out at 30. A total of 240 marks gives 30.00.

Passing year one

Year one is passed subject by subject, at 40% of each subject's maximum — the marks in the last column above. There is no aggregate minimum: one subject below its pass mark fails the year however high the total.

Year two — grade 12, out of 70

In year two you sit four subjects fixed by the field you choose, each out of 175 — 700 marks in total. That total is divided by 10 to give a score out of 70, so 620 marks gives 62.00.

The arithmetic is identical in all six fields. The field decides which four subjects you sit, not how they are counted.

The final average

The final average is the two scores added together, out of 100. You pass at 50 or above.

A worked example

A student scores 80 in Arabic, 75 in English, 33 in Jordan History and 48 in Islamic Education in year one, then 140, 150, 160 and 170 in year two.

LineMarksScore
Year one23623.60
Year two62062.00
Anticipated average85.60

85.60 is above 50, so the anticipated result is a pass.

How the decimal is shown

The average is truncated to two decimals and never rounded up, so the figure you see is never higher than the one you earned: 29.125 displays as 29.12. The pass test is applied to the exact value, before truncation.

Calculate your average

The two-year calculator applies these formulas to your own marks. For students under the 2007-and-earlier system, use the old-system calculator.
